Moldova could send explosive ordnance specialists to Ukraine to clear the territories from which Russian troops have withdrawn, President Maia Sandu told a press conference Monday.
She said Moldova has already offered its services and is now awaiting Ukraine’s response.
Sandu went on to deplore the “shocking massacre” in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha. “Moldova strongly condemns these crimes against humanity, just as it condemns this illegal and unprovoked war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine”, she stated. April 4 was declared a day of national mourning in Moldova in remembrance of all the innocent lives lost in Ukraine.
Maia Sandu has confirmed that she has been in contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since the start of the war. During such discussions, she condemned the war and assured his Ukrainian counterpart that Moldova will continue to provide support to refugees.
On a different note, the president also spoke about the prospects for Moldova’s integration into the European Union, following the submission of a formal application for membership a month ago. She mentioned that Chisinau will soon receive a detailed questionnaire from the European Commission which will estimate the degree of Moldova’s compliance in a number of areas. After that, Moldova will be evaluated by the Commission at what stage it is advancing in different fields.
