Moldova committed itself to respect human rights concerning organ transplantation

Moldova took upon itself the responsibility to implement the necessary measures in order to prevent and stop violations of rights in the domain of transplantation of organs as well as provide the related sanctions in its legislation. These provisions are part of the Additional Protocol to the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine, on Transplantation of Organs and Tissues of Human Origin. The protocol obliges the states to guarantee equitable access to transplantation services for patients, to protect the rights and freedoms of donors and beneficiaries of organs and tissues and eliminate abuse and violations in the domain of transplantation, which endanger the human life and dignity. On the basis of the Protocol, the states will cooperate through information exchange concerning the necessity of organs and tissues. In particular, they shall undertake appropriate measures to facilitate the rapid and safe transportation of organs and tissues to and from their territory. The protocol was adopted by the Council of Europe on January 24 2002 and was signed by 20 states so far. Seven of them ratified the document. Moldova signed the Protocol on February 8, 2007.
