Moldova takes part in the global event Earth Hour for the sixth year in a row. Concerts, contests and flashmob meetings will be staged in the Botanical Garden in Chisinau on March 29, between 6pm and 10pm.
Moldova joins 150 countries in celebrating Earth Hour. Companies and people are urged to turn off the lights between 8:30pm and 9:30pm in public institutions, apartment buildings and private homes in a move to save energy resources and contribute to environment protection and reduced climate change.
According to the Ministry of Environment, if the entire population of Moldova turns off the lights for an hour, there will be saved 278,000 kWh of power produced with 86,800 cubic meters of natural gas, with 165 tonnes of greenhouse gases being emitted.
Moldova is a small country, but energy consumption for satisfying the vital needs increases constantly every year. The increased consumption inevitably leads to higher generation volumes. As a result, the environment is affected by noxious emissions.
Earth Hour also attracts attention to climate change. This initiative means one hour without electricity one day a year and also enables everyone to have a say about their future and to cooperate in building a better future for our planet.
