Moldova between two unions

The European Union is not ready to discuss the enlargement possibility now, but Moldova should take into account the EU’s set of rules that were implemented in a number of counties, which later benefited from these rules, German independent expert Martin Sieg said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “It is obvious that the political parties started to attract voters and the messages they send are intended for certain segments of electors. I cannot tell the Moldovan people what they should do. It depends on weather Moldova chooses the Euroasian Customs Union or the European Union. I think the European project is more comprehensive and can offer more,” Martin Sieg said in a meeting of the Press Club of the Foreign Policy Association. According to the German expert, Moldova should analyze which of the options favors more the reforms, guarantees stable development, attracts foreign investors and ensures political stability. Victor Chirila, executive director of the Foreign Policy Association, said there should be held a serious discussion where to provide arguments and counterarguments and convince society that only the European integration will offer Moldova the chance of economic reformation. “We must choose between a union whose member countries have fragile democracy and the European project where the human rights are respected and there is freedom of expression,” said Victor Chirila. The statements come after the leader of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin in a news conference said that Moldova’s only chance to break the economic impasse is to join the Euroasian Customs Union. According to the Communist leader, such a decision must be taken as soon as possible because the potential of integrating into the EU was used and the European reforms are aimed only at amending the legislation, but not at improving the living standards in Moldova.
