Moldova was accepted as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) within the UN General Assembly held in New York. Thus, Moldova filled one of the 18 vacancies on the Council for 2016-2018, IPN reports.
Moldova was chosen by 179 votes in favor. The country competed alongside the Czech Republic for the two vacant places allocated to the UN Eastern European Group.
As a member of ECOSOC, Moldova will be able to promote within the UN the national priorities in the economic, social and environmental sectors, including in the context of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This will be the second term of Moldova as a member of the ECOSOC, after that of 2008-2010, which culminated with the holding of the post of Vice President of the UN Economic and Social Council in 2010.
