For the Republic of Moldova, July 1, 2016 is probably the most important date since the delectation of its independence because on this day the country became a fully-fledged associate member of the EU. Such statements were made by Prime Minister Pavel Filip and Head of Parliament Andrian Candu in a joint meeting of representatives of the executive and legislature and European advisers, staged on the occasion of the full coming into force of the Moldova – EU Association Agreement, IPN reports.

“Today we live a historical moment. It is probably the most important one since the declaration of independence. Today the Republic of Moldova became an associate member of the European Union. In these almost six months of intense cooperation between the executive and the legislature, probably more than during the last two years was done. But there is yet a lot to be done,” Andrian Candu stated at the start of the meeting.

The Speaker noted that practically all the shortcomings witnessed because of the political instability were removed. In the immediate future, the authorities must center on the implementation of the adopted laws and launched reforms.

Pavel Filip said that on this day the Republic of Moldova takes one more step towards the EU. Some of the opposition parties hope that the country will abandon its European path, but they hope in vain. “After six months of work, the Republic of Moldova is more stable from political and economic viewpoints. We pay the salaries and pensions. The street protests were halted. The external partners discuss with us,” he stated.

According to the Premier, the authorities won a battle. “But in the Republic of Moldova there is lack of confidence and division because a billion of dollars was stolen and the fight against corruption was simulated. Our goal is to advance on the path of reforms and to regain the people’s confidence,” said Pavel Filip.

In the immediate period, the authorities are to adopt the administrative reform strategy, the new Broadcasting Code and amendments to the Constitution concerning the appointment of the prosecutor general. The officials noted that it is important to sign a new program with the IMF so as to regain the confidence of the potential investors. A new IMF mission that wil have the mandate to negotiate the program will arrive in Moldova next week.

The coming into force of the Association Agreement means the completion of the procedure for ratifying it by the signatory parties and, respectively, the application of all of its provisions.
