Moldova and Lithuania are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. In an event staged by the Embassy of Lithuania in Chisinau, Ambassador Rimantas Latakas said the cooperation relations started 25 years ago have been firm and friendly and didn’t refer only to diplomatic relations and meetings of different levels and covered such areas as arts, science, culture and healthcare. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary, Moldova’s Post Office issued an anniversary postage stamp and a stamp, IPN reports.

Rimantas Latakas noted the diplomatic relations between the two sovereign and independent states were established in July 1992. After 2006, when embassies were opened in Vilnius and Chisinau, the cooperation relations became more dynamic. Lithuania attaches great importance to the fact that Moldova is a member of the Eastern Partnership.

“Lithuania fully supports the Republic of Moldova in its choice to become part of the European area and to integrate into the political and economic spheres of the European Union. Lithuania shares its experience of European integration, which it gained through different cooperation projects designed to develop the country and to strengthen the democratic institutions. The benefit of the two nations is the principle on which this cooperation is based and the tendency is to cement this relationship, based on understanding, openness and mutual respect,” stated the ambassador.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Lilian Darii said that today is an important day for both of the states. “On this day we remember the period of 1989-1991, when Lithuania and the Republic of Moldova went through a period of national revitalization that led to the regaining of independence by Lithuania and the gaining of independence by Moldova,” he stated.

Lilian Darii said the Moldovan-Lithuanian relations are based on mutual respect and common interest and the Moldovan authorities have always welcomed the results achieved by Lithuania. This country managed to modernize itself and to become an EU member and a NATO member. Moldova in the period has felt Lithuania’s support, with which it managed to sign the Association Agreement with the EU, and continues to enjoy assistance in implementing this accord, which will bring Moldova closer to the EU.

Moldova’s Post Office issued a postage stamp and a special stamp devoted to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states. Victoria Tanase, division head at Moldova’s Post Office, said the stamp will be put practically on all the envelopes that contain the flags of 50 states with which the Republic of Moldova established diplomatic relations in 1992. The stamp will travel through the world and will convey the message that Moldova marks such an event. The stamp depicts the Tighina Fortress of Moldova and the Trakai Castle of Lithuania.
