Moldova will develop, together with Japan, environmental projects in the framework of a lending mechanism for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Minister of Environment Iuliana Cantaragiu, in the ceremony to sign the memorandum of cooperation, said the transfer of technologies, products, systems, services and top carbonization infrastructure will be facilitated. There will be implemented alleviation measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By the designed and implemented projects, Moldova will make the updated national contributions that derive from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The minister noted that after the signing of the memorandum, there will be identified projects that generate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The type of the project, the financial aspect, the budgets and transfer of technology will be discussed separately for each project together with the donor institution of Japan, “We will identify projects in priority areas in Moldova, including forestry and waste management,” stated Iuliana Cantaragiu.

The Ambassador of Japan to Moldova Yoshihiro Katayama said the memorandum signed today comes to extend cooperation in the fields of climate change and environmental protection. The Governments of Japan and of Moldova will combine forces to reduce gas emissions and will implement the national contributions agreed based on the Paris Agreement. The people of Japan have always stood by Moldova and the signed document will offer new opportunities for the Moldovan-Japanese partnership.

The project proposals that generate emissions reductions will be examined by a joint committee consisting of representatives of the two sides. The committee will decide the procedures for implementing bilateral projects, will identify methodologies, will examine the project documentation and will ensure monitoring.
