Moldova intends to reduce by half the share of people who earn 2.15 dollars a day and of those who suffer hunger by 2015. By signing the Millennium Declaration at the 2000 U.N. Summit in New York, Chisinau has pledged to implement eight Millennium Development Objectives by 2015. According to data of UNDP Chisinau, „the poverty continues to be a multidimensional phenomenon that represents major risks, but Moldova has reduced the extreme poverty rate by one third between 1998 and 2000 down to 26.2 percent.” „The same positive trend was maintained later. The economic growth that started in 2000 had a positive effect on poverty reduction in country, while poverty rate dropped down to 52.2 percent.” In order to eradicate the extreme poverty and hunger, Moldova has pledged to take some primary actions, including to maintain the social nature of economic policies aimed to improve the life, facilitate the access of people to social services and to create new jobs, especially for the poor. These objectives are in consensus with the Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and the European Union’s Action Plan for Moldova.
