The Ministry of Justice is seeking applications in a process to preselect candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. The applications, which should be submitted by October 20, will be assessed by a MoJ commission that is yet to be formed.

Eligible are Moldovan citizens who speak Romanian and who have at least 10 years’ experience in the field of law, which must include at least 5 years as prosecutor or judge or at least 8 years as lawyer or criminal investigator.

Barred from applying are people who have been members of political parties or sociopolitical movements in the last three years, or members of the High Council of Prosecutors (CSP) in the last six months.

Justice Minister Olesea Stamate has told IPN that the makeup of the preselection commission will be announced during this process.

Under the new selection rules, the CSP will need to pick a PG from the candidates shortlisted by the MoJ commission.

The PG position fell vacant after Eduard Harunjen resigned on July 11 under pressure from Parliament. On August 9, the CSP attempted to start a selection process per the old rules, but Parliament scrambled to adopt new legislation which rendered the effort invalid.
