The 50,400 doses of the first lot of Spikevax vaccine doses made by Moderna, which was donated to Moldova through the COVAX Facility, during the next few days will be distributed proportionally to all the national vaccination units, including in Gagauzia and the Transnistrian region. The information was confirmed for IPN by Veaceslav Guțu, epidemiologist of the National Public Health Agency.

“The order concerning the distribution of the Moderna vaccine is now being drafted and we hope that the doses will be delivered to all the national centers by this weekend or better by this Tuesday or Wednesday,” said the epidemiologist.

The lot of vaccine doses was received by the National Public Health Agency on November 27.

According to secretary of state of the Ministry of Health Svetlana Nicolaescu, the consignment of COVID-19 vaccine is of real support for all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The vaccination pace should be hastened given the appearance of the Omicron vaccine that is even more contagious and dangerous than the previous variants.

The vaccine made by Moderna in Moldova is administered to persons older than 18, in two doses at an interval of 28 days from each other. Clinical studies showed that this vaccine becomes 94.1% effective against COVID-19 in 14 days of the administration of the first dose.

About 931,000 people have been vaccinated in Moldova against COVID-19 since March 2. Moldova was the first country in Europe that received COVID-19 vaccine doses through COVAX. Earlier, Moldova got over 535,000 Astrazeneca, Pfizer/BioNtech and Janssen/ Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses through the same facility.
