The mixed electoral system was introduced also with the aim to causing division among the pro-European and unionist parties. To score a victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections, the right should take part in this with a common bloc and a common national list of candidates. The issue was developed in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

The leader of the National Liberal Party Vitalia Pavlichenko said it was important to agree a pact between the unionist and the pro-European parties. As this didn’t happen, the unionists should make a pact and decide what they can do together. “If the goal is to unite, why didn’t the Europeanists, unionists come to unite when the mixed system was promoted. We didn’t issue then a common statement and didn’t form a common platform to fight against this system that disadvantages the national right,” stated the politician.

Valentin Dolganiuc, one of the founder of the Euro-unionist Convention, said there is only one possibility for those of the right to win the upcoming elections – one electoral bloc with one national list. The mixed electoral system was imposed by President Igor Dodon against the unionists as majority unionist voters do not exist in any of the constituencies. “In such conditions, a majority of votes cannot be won in any of the single-member constituencies,” stated Valentin Dolganiuc.

The president of the Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoacă said that even if a number of rounds of voting are held, the mixed electoral system is anyway detrimental to the pro-European, unionist vote and to democracy. It is already late for the Europeanist and unionist parties to combine forces in order to achieve a good result in the February 24, 2019 elections. “We should think how to organize ourselves so that everyone has an own direction of action on this union front,” stated the Liberal leader.
