A minor boy stayed for eight months more than prescribed at the Balti Psychiatric Hospital. Representatives of the office of the children’s ombudsperson identified this case during a working visit to the hospital. This is the second case of the kind in the last two years, IPN reports.

The child was admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital in accordance with the relevant procedures and based on the consent of his mother, who was seriously ill. While the child was receiving treatment, his mother died. “As nobody inquired about the child’s fate when the treatment was finished, the doctors contacted the tutelage authority that was to defend the rights of the orphan. The representatives of the tutelage authority didn’t yet react promptly to doctors’ requests. As a result, the child continued to stay at the hospital for another about eight months,” says a communique of the office of the children’s ombudsperson.

An investigation was opened to establish why the tutelage authority didn’t take the child from the psychiatric institution. According to the children’s ombudsperson, the child’s right to freedom was thus infringed and abuses towards the minor were allowed.

The minor is now in the Orhei residential institution for children (boys) with mental disabilities.
