Ministry of Justice to cooperate with senior justice adviser of U.S. Embassy

The Ministry of Justice and the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau have signed a memorandum of understanding in support of the justice sector reform. The document envisions cooperation with a senior justice adviser of the Embassy. Assistance will be offered in implementing the priorities in the justice sector and to facilitate the provision of technical, training and expert assistance by the U.S., IPN reports.

The document was signed by Minister of Justice Sergiu Litvinenco and U.S. Ambassador Kent. D. Logsdon. The signing took place during a meeting of the minister and Richard Nephew, Coordinator on Global Anti-Corruption of the U.S. State Department, who is in Moldova on a visit.

Sergiu Litvinenco informed Richard Nephew about the reforms launched by the Ministry of Justice, namely pre-vetting, reformation of the Supreme Court of Justice, extraordinary assessment of judges and prosecutors, amendment of the legal framework for unlocking particular process that would facilitate the completion of cases, punishment of persons to blame and confiscation of the property obtained by acts of corruption.

“I express my conviction that we can further bank on constructive cooperation with the U.S. and its institutions in taking measures to clean the justice system, to strengthen the law enforcement agencies and to ensure the rule of law,” stated the minister, being quoted in a press release.
