The beer and beer drinks could be included in the list of alcoholic beverages. An initiative to this effect was proposed by the Ministry of Health. If the bill is adopted, the advertising of beer will be banned, IPN reports.
According to the bill author, the new regulations are designed to discourage the abuse of alcohol. The informative note is accompanied by statistics showing that 85% of the men and 72% of the women in Moldova consume alcoholic beverages. Beer is mainly drunk by young people.
The Ministry said that over 9,000 people were treated from alcoholism in hospital in 2015. The cost of treatment amounts to 5,800 lei per case. Another 17,000 people received treatment at home.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Health’s initiative to list beer as an alcoholic drink was put forward shortly after Parliament adopted in the first reading a bill submitted by unaffiliated MP Ion Balan whereby wine was declared a food product.
