In connection with the explosion in Beirut, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration said Moldova’s Embassy in Ankara, which also deals with the relations with Lebanon, is in contact with the responsible authorities of Beirut so as to determine if the victims include Moldovans. For now, it is not known about Moldovan victims, IPN reports.

Minister Oleg Țulea in the evening of August 4 transmitted a message of compassion to his Lebanese counterpart Charbel Wehbe. “In the name of the Republic of Moldova, we offer condolences to the grieving families and wish a speedy recovery to those hurt in the Beirut explosion,” runs the message.

If necessary, the Moldovan citizens in Lebanon can contact Moldova’s Embassy through the email address ankara@mfa.gov.md or can phone the Ministry’s Call Center.

As regards the international press reports about the alleged Moldovan colors under which the ship in the Port of Beirut sailed, the Ministry recommends contacting the Naval Agency that manages the given register.

The Ministry noted it will provide updated information in case of developments of public interest.

The foreign press reported that at least 100 people were killed and 4,000 wounded in the massive explosion that shook Beirut on Tuesday. It’s still unclear what exactly caused the explosion. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab said an investigation would focus on an estimated 2,750 metric tons of the explosive ammonium nitrate, stored at a warehouse.
