Farmers will receive compensation if this summer’s drought and heat compromised at least 60% of their corn harvest and at least 70% of their wheat harvest. The aid will not exceed 500,000 lei per applicant, IPN reports. The regulations on granting compensation will be examined by the Cabinet on September 11, Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolea said on Monday.

The aid will be calculated and offered to farmers through the Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture (AIPA). All economic agents that have documents confirming the incurred losses must submit them to the local AIPA office.

The maximum amount of aid cannot exceed 500,000 lei per applicant. The cumulative ceiling granted to an applicant in 2024 is 1 million lei, including from the aid received for the partial compensation of damage caused by natural disasters in 2023.

Farmers with agricultural land that is in the service area of a functioning irrigation system and those with land for which they benefited from subsidized coverage are not eligible for the aid.

Applicants for aid must have a statistical report 4-AGR with sowing data based on which the eligible areas will be calculated. The report must be registered with the local statistics body by June 3, 2024, except for applicants who manage an area of agricultural land of less than 10 ha, who present the confirmation certificate issued by the representative authorities of the LPA.

The Commission for Emergency Situations last week approved the allocation of 100 million lei from the Government’s Intervention Fund for the partial compensation of the losses incurred by agricultural producers as a result of this summer’s drought and extreme heat.
