Minister of the Interior Pavel Voicu said the institution he heads is working on a bill to make the punishments for drivers who break the road traffic regulations more severe, especially in cases of drunk driving and speeding. The motor vehicle could be confiscated when the driver is caught driving under the influence, IPN reports.

“The fines do not scare them. These are not enough. That’s why we will treat this as an offense and the cars will be confiscated,” Pavel Voicu stated in the talk show “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel.

The punishments for breaking the speed limit and for driving in banned places will also become harsher. “We will also suggest that those who break the law should not be allowed to benefit from a 50% discount on the fine if they pay this during the first 72 hours. If they do not understand that life is given priority, we will make punishments harsher. We are close to finishing a project to set up public surveillance cameras on roads. I think that this way we will reduce the number of road accidents and will save more lives,” stated the minister.

According to him, the surveillance cameras will record the speed of motor vehicles.
