Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu said there is no danger for the capital city to remain without water. There is sufficient water in the barrage in Dubasari and in the barrage in Novodnestrovsk. The minister made such comments after the administration of the public utility “Apa-Canal Chisinau” warned that a critical level of water of only 8.4m was recorded in the Nistru River following the hydrological drought, IPN reports.
“The situation is not simple. Everything is fine when there is sufficient water in the Nistru and the water pumping station can work appropriately. But there is enough water in the barrage in Dubasari and, respectively, in the barrage in Novodnestrovsk so that appropriate levels of water can be ensured for the pumping station of Chisinau and the pumping station of Odessa too, by regulating the discharged volumes,” said the minister.
He also said that “Apa-Canal Chisinau” was repeatedly recommended to make investments in this regard because a number of works need to be done, including bringing down the water pumps. “Those from “Apa-Canal Chisinau” must know that if the Ukrainians from Novodnestrovsk do not think about the Moldovans from Chisinau, they definitely think about the Ukrainians from Odessa region, which has the biggest water pumping station on the Nistru and which is the only source of water for the Ukrainians from Odessa,” stated Valeriu Munteanu.
“Apa-Canal Chisinau” warned that following the recent hydrological drought, the level of water in the Nistru River decreased to 8.4 meters on August 1. This is a critical level that endangers the supply of water to Chisinau. When the level of water decreases to under 8.4 m, the pumps at the water pumping station on the Nistru stop work. The consequences can be catastrophic and not only the residents of Chisinau municipality, but also the inhabitants of other settlements supplied with water from the Nistru will remain without water.
