The European Union can cooperate only with the partner that wants to cooperate with it. If such a partner does not exist, the EU cannot do anything, executive director of Piligrim-Demo Center Mikhail Sirkeli stated, commenting on the possibilities of stepping up the implementation of Moldova’s European integration agenda.
“We should not expect the EU to intervene and do our homework, to do the reforms needed to implement mutual agreements. This should be done only by the Republic of Moldova,” the expert said in IPN’s public debate “Current place of European integration on Moldova’s sociopolitical agenda”.
He voiced hope that the elections will shed light on the prospects of our country. “If the government does not include persons who are ready to seriously discuss with the European Union, we should try and change the situation by elections, do so that such people appear there and undertake to fulfill Moldova’s commitments and to implement vital reforms,” noted Mikhail Sirkeli.
“They already speak about Moldova as about a failed state. It cannot be worse. We surely should find a way out and this can anytime be found. The most important thing is not to lose people on the way.”
The executive director of Piligrim-Demo considers it is important to continue the dialogue with those who take decisions. “There is always hope that this thing will change something,” stated Mikhail Sirkeli.
However, we should wait for the next wave of public dissatisfaction that could exert pressure on the political power and elites and for the moment when the elites of the right and of the left will realize that the rapprochement with the European Union is the only possibility for developing Moldova”.
