Any thesis and antithesis can be dealt with by identifying a joint solution and a joint viewpoint, at a peaceful dialogue. Both Romaniaphobia and Russiaphobia are scarecrows imposed in society. They are two sides of the same coin and are fueled by speculative political projects, Mihail Lupashko, coordinator of the Public Dialogue Platform “Statehood – Moldova”, stated in the public debate “Unionists, statehood supporters and ‘nostalgic people’: confrontation of ideas about the right and capacity of the Republic of Moldova to be an independent state” that was staged by IPN News Agency in coproduction with Radio Moldova.

Mihail Lupashko said the representatives of any conception, either unionism or statehood, must struggle for their dream, but there should be a dialogue and a healthy climate for discussions. These discussions include different people, but those who speculate on political development courses, who steal, who divide the people and increase poverty must be excluded.

According to the coordinator of the Public Dialogue Platform “Statehood – Moldova”, Moldova’s statehood is the main issue that should be raised by society because the borders in the region are delimited based on statehood and any modification of the borders can lead to unexpected conflict situations.

As regards the unionist idea, Mihail Lupashko said that this can be implemented by peaceful ways, by calm and civilized discussions, so as to prevent the use of this idea as a catalyst for conflicts, resistance and possible speculations by politicians who propagate Romaniaphobia and Russiaphobia. A consensus should be reached following the expression of contradictory opinions, by moving from extremities to the middle, even if this will take a long time.

According to him, only such discussions will help us overcome misunderstandings. All the parts of society must be able to state their opinion, but within a peaceful dialogue.

The public debate “Unionists, statehood supporters and ‘nostalgic people’: confrontation of ideas about the right and capacity of the Republic of Moldova to be an independent state” is the 59th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates”, produced with the assistance of the German Foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
