Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi thanked Ireland for being an active supporter of Moldova’s EU bid. “Ireland’s support helps us take decisive steps towards European Union membership”, declared Mihai Popșoi during a meeting with Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin, who is also Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defense.

The meeting took place during a working visit by Moldova’s top diplomat to Dublin, which, according to the MFA, marks an important step in the bilateral relations between Moldova and Ireland.

According to the Moldovan official, after almost 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moldova and Ireland, the Moldovan-Irish bilateral cooperation is now experiencing a special intensification. “Last week, we witnessed the first ever visit of a Moldovan president to Ireland. Also, the Irish government has announced its intention to open an embassy in Chisinau, which will significantly contribute to strengthening the economic ties between our states”, said Mihai Popșoi.

The discussions between the two officials focused on the deepening of bilateral relations, the European agenda of Moldova and regional security. The ministers expressed their commitment to expanding the cooperation agenda on the commercial-economic and cultural dimensions.

In Dublin, the foreign minister also met with Seán Ó Fearghaíl, speaker of the lower house of Ireland’s parliament. The discussions focused on essential topics of the political-diplomatic dialogue, the intensification of bilateral cooperation, internal and regional security. At the same time, the two officials expressed their mutual commitment to deepening the bilateral cooperation agenda in multiple areas.

The Moldovan official noted the solid inter-parliamentary partnership between the two legislatures. Mihai Popșoi also spoke about the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting friendly relations and deepening ties with the European Union states, in the context of the European integration of Moldova.
