In the Republic of Moldova, there is no economic and financial stability as, if there had been such stability, Moldova’s Parliament wouldn’t have risked to adopt such laws as the citizenship by investment law and the law on voluntary declaration and fiscal stimulation, Mihai Popșoi, vice president of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS), stated in the public debate “Year 2018: accomplishments, failures and challenges in Moldova’s European integration” that was the 99th installment of the series “Developing political culture through public debates” staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

According to Mihai Popșoi, the European Union offered Moldova a visa-free regime not for the authorities to grant the Moldovan to foreigners in a non-transparent way for a small sum of money. This endangers the liberalized visa regime as well.

As regards capital amnesty, the forgiveness of the debts of people who repeatedly showed lack of goodwill and accumulated enormous debts is unjust amid the absence of similar actions in relation to the people with small incomes who, for different reasons, collected debts for heat, for example. “From economic viewpoint, this is a moral hazard. Such an act does not contribute to the sustainability of a transparent, legal economic process in public interests, but perpetuates corrupt schemes in the economy,” stated Mihai Popșoi.

According to the vice president of the PAS, the given laws point to the government’s despair as the emptiness left by the lack of European funds should be somehow covered, by stratagems, at a time when neither Turkey nor Russia hurry to offer Moldova money for free. Even if they offered this money, this would be given in conditions that are unacceptable for a democratic state.

In another development, Mihai Popșoi said the existence of achievements in the economy and the democratic backsliding are the result of the desperate attempt made by the current parliamentary majority, mainly the Democratic Party, to remain in power.

The politician noted the people play the most important role in the sociopolitical process as they are the bearers of sovereignty, in accordance with the Constitution of any democratic state. The upcoming elections are a last chance for Moldova to return to normality and the last chance to save the European integration course or we will slip to the Russian model.

The debate “Year 2018: accomplishments, failures and challenges in Moldova’s European integration” forms part of the series of public debates staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova as part of the project “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
