Deputy Parliament Speaker Mihai Popșoi, of the Action and Solidarity Party, said that in fair and equal conditions, incumbent President Igor Dodon does not have chances of winning this year’s presidential elections. The opponent of Igor Dodon should be a person with real chances of defeating him and of winning office of President, IPN reports.

The politician noted the opinion polls would not help Igor Dodon win as not the polls, but the people vote.

According to the MP, a kind of rehearsal for the presidential elections should be performed at the new parliamentary elections that will be held in Hâncești constituency. The forces of the right should field a common, nonparty candidate that will be later supported. “In Hâncești constituency, we will have a very good, apolitical candidate who enjoyed the support of fellows from the DA Platform. The choice is between a political candidate, a party mate and an apolitical candidate, as the fellows from the PPPDA suggested. We would like our colleagues from the center-right to support us as this is the key to success,” he stated in a program on TV8 channel.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Alexandru Slusari, of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform”, said he sees no problem if a common, nonparty candidate representing a number of parties of the right is fielded for the presidential elections. There is yet time until the election campaign starts, but the representatives of the parties that support this idea should come together and take a decision. “The only counterargument we heard was that we didn’t give names and didn’t propose a particular candidate,” he explained, noting the PPPDA didn’t provide names so as not to give the impression that the names come from the PPPDA.

“WatchDog” expert Valeriu Pașa said the president of the PAS Maia Sandu is the politician who can generate confidence and transmit this confidence to the voters. She is thus the most suitable candidate for President. The PPPDA’s proposal shows that this party does not want Maia Sandu to run in the upcoming elections. “It is the only person in the public sphere who can now be a worthy opponent for Igor Dodon,” stated the expert.

“The objective in the presidential elections is to remove Igor Dodon, who will pull the whole team after him, from the dominant position. If he loses, the justice system, the prosecutor general or the Government will not change, but serious fissures can appear inside the PSRM.”
