The leaving was predictable at a time when the opposition is completely demoralized, vice president of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) Mihai Popșoi stated, commenting on Igor Dodon’s decision to quit as MP and as president of the Party of Socialists. According to Popșoi, the PSRM’s announcement concerning the planned mass rallies if the natural gas crisis is not solved represents crass cynicism as the energy situation in which we are now is a consequence of the inaction of the former governments, IPN reports.

The announcement made by the leader of PSRM Igor Dodon didn’t surprise a part of the MPs. Deputy Parliament Speaker Mihai Popșoi said he anticipated Igor Dodon’s withdrawal from the legislative body.

“Since he was elected MP, he hasn’t attended many Parliament sittings and this administration formula that he now tries to find takes me to the idea of a “politburo”. The Socialists return to their origins. The association with the Communists reminded them of their roots. The opposition is demoralized and pays now for the mistakes made the past few years, but our priority is to focus on the improvement of citizens’ lives. Dodon will be preoccupied with his personal economic relationship, with personal benefits as until now,” Mihai Popșoi stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

According to him, the PSRM-PCRM opposition behaves cynically when it tries to politically capitalize on the people’s dissatisfaction with the current energy crisis. Earlier, Igor Dodon said that if the people are cold in their homes, they will mount protests “so as to help them warm up”.

Political commentators consider Igor Dodon decided to leave the Legislature following the replacement of the administration of the Prosecutor General’s Office, trying to avoid the lifting of his immunity in Parliament.

“This withdrawal from the position of party leader is at least half a year late. As long as Igor Dodon managed PSRM, their political opponents could sleep calmly. He has a very negative impact on the party’s image. This decision to give up was determined also by the breath of fresh air witnessed at the Prosecutor’s Office. Dodon paves the way for his refuge so as to avoid a frontal meeting with justice in the Republic of Moldova,” said political commentator Anatol Țăranu.

On October 18, Socialist leader Igor Dodon announced that he decided to vacate his seat of MP and to quit as leader of PSRM. According to him, during the party’s extraordinary congress on December 18, the method of electing the party’s administration is to be modified so that PSRM is managed by a collegial body consisting of five members.
