Mihai Ghimpu will propose bill to make media more responsible

The Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu is for the adoption by Parliament of a law that will make the media more responsible. He believes that only this way will the media in Moldova be truly free. Mihai Ghimpu stated his opinion in the meeting of the legislature’s legal commission for appointments and immunities, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Liberal refused to endorse a bill put forward by his party colleague Corina Fusu and another bill submitted by unaffiliated lawmaker Mihai Godea, which provide punishments for the persons holding responsible posts, who exert pressure on the mass media. Mihai Ghimpu said that a bill is needed to institute punishments for the media outlets that slander persons and disseminate lies. “We need a law for the media that spreads ‘dirt’. The legislative body will adopt these initiatives in the second reading only if one more bill to make the media more responsible is tabled. We should have not only disciplined MPs and judges, but also disciplined media outlets,” he stated. The Liberal lawmaker repeatedly said that some of the media outlets that are politically affiliated launched a campaign against him.
