Mihai Ghimpu: What will we do after June 16?

The two bills to amend article 78 of the Constitution that were submitted by the Communists Party (PCRM) and the Alliance for European Integration and approved by the Constitutional Court are to be examined by the special parliamentary commission for the modification of article 78. Speaker Mihai Ghimpu said that this commission's decision will be later debated in Parliament, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The problem is that the amendments suggested by these two bills will come into force in six months. What will we do after June 16? I must dissolve the Parliament. If early legislative elections are announced without modifying the mechanism, we will not be able to break the constitutional stalemate,” Mihai Ghimpu said. Mihai Ghimpu, Alexandru Tanase, Aurel Baiesu and Ion Plesca are set to meet with the president of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio in Strasbourg on May 5. “I do not intend to impose my opinion in Strasbourg as some think I pursue certain interests. We must identify a solution. If the legislative body cannot do it, who can? The Communists say they will vote only after elections. If the commission rejects the referendum proposal, it will depend on the PCRM if one of the bills is passed. We cannot play with Moldova's future,” said the caretaker head of state. The PCRM proposed electing the head of state in Parliament by three rounds, by 61, 57 and 52 votes respectively, while the Alliance for European Integration considers the President should be elected directly by the people.
