The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu considers the Venice Commission will not support the modification of the electoral system in this period, no matter what electoral system is proposed to be introduced – the uninominal one or the mixed-member one. The reaction appeared after Parliament passed bills on the two systems in the first reading on May 5 and then decided to merge these, IPN reports.

“The hurry to replace the electoral system before the arrival of Venice Commission experts makes us think that this Commission will not support the replacement of the electoral system in this period, either by the uninominal one or the mixed-member one. Secondly, the compromise was made... The bill of the “opposition” was taken as a basis,” the Liberal leader wrote on a social networking site.

The Democrats’ bill on the uninominal voting system and the Socialists’ bill on the mixed-member electoral system were merged by the votes of 74 MPs. The Liberal MPs left the assembly hall in protest immediately after the bill concerning the uninominal voting system was included in the agenda.
