The Liberal Party’s candidates for President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu on October 2 started his election campaign by an event staged in the “Union Square” of the Romanian town Iasi. This was held under the slogan “United for the Union”.
In his speech, Mihai Ghimpu said he does not need to be the President of a state and wants this office to move to Cotroceni in Bucharest and that President should be the President of all the Romanians. “I will be the President who will prepare and effect the Union,” he stated.
He also said that he will ensure Moldova’s Union with Romania in 2019, by the model of Germany, not by referendum, and the Union with Romania is the only chance for Moldova to become integrated into the European Union. He noted that Moldova’s chance of becoming part of the EU is now 30-40 years away.
Attending the event, the first deputy chairman of the Liberal Party, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said the Union with Romania will have a positive impact on both of the states. He noted that King Mihai I could become again President of Romania and could easier ensure the Union given his relations with all the royal European families.
The Liberal leader was supported in Iasi by several hundred Moldovans who came by train and bus.
