The Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu considers that Moldova will not sign the Association Agreement with the EU at the Vilnius Summit if it does not resolve the problems related to the movement of goods and people in the country’s eastern districts, at the boarder with Ukraine. According to him, a solution is to set up customs posts in the eastern region, while another one is to change the format of the Transnistrian conflict settlement talks, IPN reports.
“Only the customs posts can ensure the control of the flow of people and goods through the eastern border with Ukraine. This does not mean setting a border. Such posts must exist until the Transnistrian dispute is resolved,” the Liberal leader said in a press briefing.
According to Mihai Ghimpu, the Pro-European coalition does not aim to promote Europeans’ interests. He considers that Parliament must adopt a decision with legal power that would convince the EU that Moldova is ready to sign the Association Agreement.
Mihai Ghimpu added that the statement adopted by Parliament has no value and represents the viewpoint of the Communist Party and was voted by ignoring the suggestions of the European Parliament. “The 5+2 format does not produce results because Russia is a party to the pact as a mediator and guarantor. The only solution is to change the format,” he underlined.
In the same press briefing, the deputy chairwoman of the Liberal Party Corina Fusu said that the human rights in the conflict zone are not respected, but those who are in power are not concerned about this.
The Liberal MPs demand that a part of the sitting where the statement on the situation in the Transnistrian region was adopted should be made public. “We request publishing the shorthand notes in order to show that the ruling alliance adopted the viewpoint of the Communists. The statement is full of grammatical mistakes. It seems that it was written on knees somewhere at the Embassy of Russia or at the PCRM,” said Liberal lawmaker Valeriu Munteanu.
According to the text of the statement adopted by the legislature on June 21, the Transnistrian conflict and all the disagreements must be settled exclusively by political and peaceful methods, by observing the democratic principles and values and the basic rights and fundamental freedoms of the people living on the two banks of the Nistru River. The unilateral actions of any kind and origin, including those aimed at legalizing any border inside the sovereign state Moldova, contribute to the undermining of the settlement process, the escalation of tensions and the defiance of the exciting settlement mechanisms, hinder the work of the group of military observers, and affect the existing peacekeeping system and the negotiating process.
