If he wants, the former mayor of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca will be the next chairman of the Liberal Party (PL), the party’s leader Mihai Ghimpu stated in the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.
“It was one thing when Dorin Chirtoaca was mayor general and it is another thing when he does not have this responsibility on his shoulders. Not because I consider myself weak or powerless. I still have power, no matter what post I hold. He no longer bears this burden and is younger, more energetic and we will be near him anyway. So, I think Dorin Chirtoaca will be elected chairman in the next congress of the party, which should take place by this autumn,” stated the politician.
As to the new mayoral elections held in Chisinau and Balti municipalities, Mihai Ghimpu said these elections showed that the Russian speakers no longer trust the Socialists, but they didn’t have an alternative in Chisinau and voted for Ion Ceban. “This shows that the Russian speakers are turning towards Renato Usatyi and a hard struggle will be witnessed in autumn. It will depend on the decision of the right. If the right does not unite and each party struggles in constituencies on their own, Plahotniuc will win,” stated the Liberal leader, adding that if the change does not occur in autumn, the new political right will discredit itself.
Mihai Ghimpu said in the autumn of 2018 it will be hotter than in January 2016, when the Filip Government was named. “If we lose the elections in autumn, it means we will also lose the Chisinau City Hall in next year’s elections,” he noted.
