The electoral constituencies were established so that the Democratic Party (PDM) and the Party of Socialists (PSRM) could win the 2018 parliamentary elections, chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu stated in the program “Emphasis on day” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Speaking about the mixed-member electoral system, Mihai Ghimpu said the internal and external situation shows that if this system is used in elections, the Republic of Moldova will lose the financial support and this means loss of the political support too. “I haven’t yet lost hope. I still believe that we can return to the proportional representation system and it is the Democratic Party that should restore this system,” stated the Liberal leader.

According to him, the only solution for Moldova not to lose the political and financial support of the Europeans and of all those who support it is to stop starting political criminal cases and controlling the prosecution service, while the judges should stop adopting laws that help the current government remain in power. “The mixed system was adopted to keep the power that has been concentrated in the hands of one person and this has nothing to do with democracy,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.

Under the new electoral system, 50 MPs will be chosen by party lists, while 51 in single-member constituencies. The MPs will be chosen by one round, by a relative majority of votes. A number of civil society organizations and civic activists announced their intention to organize a consultative referendum on the annulment of the mixed electoral system and restoration of the proportional system.
