The parliamentary alliance had agreed a candidate for the presidency of Moldova, but the March 4 Judgment by the Constitutional Court changed the situation, chairman of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.
“The name of the candidate was known and the votes needed for electing this were secured, but the Constitutional Court’s judgment thwarted the plans. It’s not true that the parliamentary alliance fixed the Court’s decision. For us, it would have been more suitable if the Head of State had been elected by Parliament. Polls show that the pro-Russian candidates are preferred. If such a candidate is elected President, a real war between the Head of State and the parliamentary alliance will start. Consequently, the people will be affected,” said the Liberal heavyweight.
Ghimpu also said that the Liberal Party will comply with the Constitutional Court’s judgment even if it does not agree with it. “It is the decision of the Constitutional Court and we must comply, even if there are decisions by this Court that weren’t implemented, like the one concerning the Romanian language,” he stated.
Ghimpu noted that the task of the parliamentary alliance is to restore the people’s confidence in the government. “We must manage until the presidential elections to convince the people not to abandon the European integration idea. It’s true that the people lost confidence. Polls show that the number of those who are pro-Russia is larger than of the pro-Europeans. But we must convince the people not to give up aspiring to better living conditions,” he said.
