Mihai Ghimpu, former Speaker of Parliament and former interim President of the Republic of Moldova, urges the other former heads of state to support and promote the October 20 constitutional referendum on joining the European Union, IPN reports.

“Today we are in a situation similar to that of 2016. Like it or not, but then the choice of direction mattered and it is the same today – we will remain in the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation or we will move towards the civilized world, towards Europe until the union with the mother country Romania,” Mihai Ghimpu, honorary president of the Liberal Party, told a press briefing.

Thus, Mihai Ghimpu launched the public campaign “Presidents for the Referendum”, also issuing a statement in which he refers to the tragic past of the Moldovan Romanians on the left bank of the Prut under Russian occupation, but also to the current difficult political situation due to the Russian Federation’s interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Moldova.

According to him, until Moldova unites with Romania, the integration into the European Union is the only intermediate solution that can help the Republic of Moldova live in safety and well-being.

The Liberal leader noted that during their tenures, the ex-Speakers and ex-Presidents of the Republic of Moldova promoted the European integration. Since the holding of the constitutional referendum on October 20 is a fait accompli, public discussions about its opportunity are useless.

“The EU offers us the chance to get out of the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation. I, Mihai Ghimpu, ex-speaker of Parliament, ex-interim president of the Republic of Moldova, believe that all the former speakers and Presidents of the republic, who promoted the European integration and who wish a free and prosperous future for the citizens, must now firmly support the referendum on the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union right,” said Mihai Ghimpu.

In his opinion, their silence will mean nothing but support for those who want the Republic of Moldova to be again connected to the Russian Federation. “I call on all the mentioned counterparts to actively support and promote the October 20 referendum through public appearances, press conferences, the media, roundtables, interviews on television, radio or media portals. The supporting of the referendum by all of those who held high-ranking positions in this state will mobilize the citizens with the right to vote and thus our path towards the democratic world and the union with the mother country will be irreversible,” stated the Liberal politician.

Mihai Ghimpu held the position of Speaker of Parliament between August 2009 and December 2010, and office of interim President of the country between September 2009 and December 2010.
