President Nicolae Timofti, Speaker Igor Corman and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca laid flowers at the statue of poet Mihai Eminescu, on the day that marks 164 since the birth of the great poet. He was also honored by the entire Cabinet of Ministers, MPs and politicians, IPN reports.
Igor Corman spoke about the topicality of Eminescu's work, about the values he promoted not only in his poetry, but in his prose and journalistic texts as well. “As the great thinker Eminescu said, culture and education build a strong nation, with dignity. We must care more about our cultural values, which represent the future of the country”, said the Speaker.
The Cabinet of Ministers together with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca laid flowers both at the statue of Mihai Eminescu and at that of Grigore Vieru, who passed away on January 16, 2009.
This is the second year when the National Culture Day is celebrated in Moldova on Eminescu's birthday. Several cultural events are organized on this occasion: a literary-artistic play on the Alley of Classics, the exhibition “Eminescu and time grows behind me” and the publishing of the volume “2013 Book of Poetry”. Another exhibition on show is “The art of 1950-1980”. The culmination of the day will be a festive concert at the National Palace “Nicolae Sulac”, during which annual culture awards will be announced.
