The statements made by the official representative of the Russian ministry of foreign affairs represent interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI) stated following Maria Zakharova’ recent assertions about the language spoken in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

“It is our sovereign right to decide how to name the language we speak and we do not accept history lessons. We reiterate our call to the Russian side not to allow interference in the internal affairs of our country,” noted the MFAEI.

The spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova said that following the historical logic, the Romanian language should be called Moldavian, and not the other way around. Zakharova claimed that they are different dialects, although linguists from both banks of the Prut River have proven that the Moldovan language does not exist.

A week ago, Moldova’s Parliament passed a bill that replaces the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language” across the national legislation. There will also be substituted the phrases “official language”, “state language”, and “mother tongue”.
