The best students and master students of Moldova received Merit Scholarships. The winners are 50 young people from ten higher education institutions of Moldova. Director of the Educational Advising Center Angela Muset has told IPN that the winners were awarded by 12,000 lei. These were selected based on their merits. This year the Program of Scholarships is at its 20th edition.
“The Program of Scholarships is the longest private program of scholarships in Moldova. This became very popular and earned a reputation among the young people. The durability of this contest is due to the studious young people. We see how the received scholarships are put to good use and our scholars become very good professionals,” stated Angela Muset.
A number of 265 students from 19 universities of Moldova took part in the current edition of the contest. Thirty-five students and 15 master students became finalists of the Program of Scholarships 2015. The 50 winners were selected by an independent commission of experts consisting of representatives of the academic community. According to Angela Muset, the academic standing of the students had to be proven by academic certificates. “Those who study medicine-biology and technical engineering had to prove that they had an average grade of 8.5 for all the years of study, while the orphan students and those with disabilities – of 8.0. Special emphasis was placed on extracurricular activities, including volunteering or those related to diverse projects,” stated the director of the Educational Advising Center.
Besides providing certificates confirming the knowledge, the students and master students took a general culture test.
During the 20 annual editions of the program, over 4,700 students took part in the contest. Of these, 1,280 students got Merit Scholarships. Since 2003, the contest has been organized by the Educational Advising Center under the aegis of the Council of Rectors of Moldova.
The Merit Scholarships contest was launched in 1996 on the initiative of Soros Foundation Moldova to encourage academic, scientific and extracurricular performance. The program of scholarships is supported financially by Moldova Agroindbank and Orange Moldova. The National Association of Young Historians of Moldova and the advertising agency Kim Art are the event’s partners, while the magazine “Saptamana”, the daily “Timpul”, the newspaper “Ziarul de Garda” and the News Agency IPN are the media partners.
