Moldova is the spoilt child of the EU on merit. As Russia is expected to exert pressure before the signing of the Association Agreement, the MEPs will help the country to overcome all the obstacles. With such encouragement messages MEPs of the European People’s Party Monica Macovei, Marian Jean Marinescu and Theodor Stolojan came to Chisinau, IPN reports.

Monica Macovei underlined the importance of the inter-human contacts. “The Romanians who went abroad to work or study are the most advanced and are those who change the country. A vote will follow in the Council of the EU in March or April. We make effort for this to happen sooner. The visa-free movement for Moldovans will become a reality in the middle of May or at the end of May at the latest,” she stated.

Monica Macovei added that together with her colleagues she will be very vigilant to prevent the appearance of obstacles in the process of liberalizing the visa regime. “The European states expressed their support for this last December. Moldova is now the most loved country of the EU, which made the fastest progress. It went far in four years,” she said, underlining the importance of signing the Association Agreement in the nearest future.

Marian Jean Marinescu said the work done in Chisinau convinced the Europeans to vote for the liberalization of the visa regime. The next steps depend on what the Moldovans will do at the parliamentary elections in November.

Theodor Stolojan stated that within the next mandate of the European Parliament, the MEPs will make effort for Moldova to get the roadmap for obtaining the status of accession candidate of the EU. “We want Moldova to form part of the groups of countries that work for the people’s prosperity as today we have three groups of countries: the first where the countries go towards the partnership with the EU and the U.S. and prosper, the second where the countries want to be powerful by dictatorship and the third where the countries are in disorder. We are afraid that Ukraine risks entering the third group,” he said.

On February 27, the European Parliament voted for abolishing the visa requirements for Moldovans.
