The European Parliament delayed the provision of the macro-financial assistance approved for Moldova this January amid concerns about the political developments in the country expressed by a number of parliamentary groups. On May 16, representatives of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of the EU were to consider methods of providing the money, but the discussions were put off for at least one month, IPN reports.

Lithuanian MEP Petras Autrevicius has told Radio Free Europe that there were invoked concerns about the situation of the media in Moldova and the recent initiatives to change the electoral legislation.

According to the correspondents of Radio Free Europe, a number of MPs of the Democratic Party of Moldova were present in the European Parliament today and tried to persuade the representatives of the center-right parties - the EPP and ALDE – to withdraw the proposal to postpone the provision of financial assistance to Moldova.

At the beginning of this year, the European Commission decided to offer Moldova €100 million in grants and loans as part of the new program of macro-financial assistance for Moldova.
