“We, the institutions of the European Union, must get more actively involved in helping candidate countries, such as the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, meet the accession criteria,” said MEP Siegfried Mureșan. According to him, as soon as the accession criteria are met, the candidate countries will become members of the European Union, IPN reports.
“I said earlier, in the plenary sitting of the European Parliament, that we, the European institutions, must unite and send the following messages to the candidates to join the European Union, such as the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine,” stated Siegfried Mureșan.
According to the MEP, the European institutions will become more actively involved to support these countries to modernize and meet the accession criteria.
The official said that accession negotiations with these countries are good for candidate countries, but they are also good for the European Union as they are the most efficient instrument for modernizing those countries, reforming them, bringing them closer to the European standards. In his view, this is not only in the interest of candidate countries, but also in the interest of the EU.
“The safer our neighbouring countries, candidate countries, are, the safer we are within the EU’s borders. That’s why I say: more ambition, greater involvement on our part in supporting them. We will not compromise on the application of the accession conditions, but as soon as these conditions are met, the door must open,” noted Siegfried Mureșan.
