There is only one way for the politicians in Moldova to regain the confidence of the European Union – to implement what the country’s governments agreed to do together with the EU, Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan said in an interview for Radio Free Europe. According to him, the reforms must be implemented not in a declarative way, but by legislative actions, IPN reports.

Siegfried Muresan is sure that the EU is disappointed with the Moldovan politicians. “But the disappointment in the political class is due not to the fact that a party that pretended to be pro-European caused the fall of the Government last October, but to the fact that the politicians ignored the 3 million people of Moldova. Regardless of the size of the EU’s disappointment in the actions of some of the politicians in Moldova, I think our duty towards the people of Moldova is more important. The figures are very clear. We know that it is in the interests of the Moldovan people to cooperate as closer as possible with the European Union,” he stated.

The MEP noted that Moldova and the EU agreed a series of measures, mainly as part of the Association Agreement, which should be implemented now. Particular progress was ache dived, but it is evident that no progress was made in fighting corruption, strengthening justice and reforming the prosecution service.

“That’s why I think that the signal given by President Nicolae Timofti was a very important one. He obeyed the law, the Constitution and the Constitutional Court’s decisions that say it clearly that a person suspected of lacking integrity cannot become Prime Minister. For me, President Timofti’s message is a very powerful one and this message refers to integrity, correctness and corruption fighting. These words should be indeed put into practice,” said Siegfried Muresan.

As to the protests mounted in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau, the MEP stated that the people must always be listened to because they are disappointed in the political class and have all the reasons to be so. As regards the possibility of early elections, he noted that the early elections mean the prolongation of the current crisis, while the political instability leads to economic instability and to a decline in foreign investment and, respectively, in the number of jobs.
