The European People’s Party (EPP) suggested the Moldovan parties of the center-right to put forward a common candidate in the presidential elections, said Siegfried Muresan, the head of the EPP’s delegation that is in Chisinau on a visit. In a news conference at IPN, the Romanian MEP noted that if these parties want to have a chance in relation to the parties of the center-left, they should propose a common candidate in the very first round of elections.

According to the official, this must be done if the parties of the center-right want to have a chance in the presidential elections. “If not, it is evident that the pro-European parties of the center-right can reach not even the second round of voting,” stated Siegfried Muresan, saying this is a very clear message on the part of the European People’s Party.

The MEP said that while in Chisinau, they met with representatives of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, the European People’s Party of Moldova, the Party “Action and Solidarity” and of the Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth”. The politicians welcomed the idea of fielding a common candidate and promised they will have discussions on the issue. “We told them that in such an important moment as this one for the Republic of Moldova, the discussions must not start with ‘red lines’, with inacceptable conditions for other parties,” he stated.

Siegfried Muresan considers that Moldova’s future President must have a profound attachment to the rule of law and must not be in conflict with the law. This must  prove that in his professional activity until now, he supported the fight against corruption, the separation of powers in the state and administrative decentralization. “The future President must also have a profound attachment to the European cause of the Republic of Moldova,” he said.

According to him, for the Republic of Moldova, as for other states, prosperity and safety are associated with anchoring in the West. “Prosperity comes from the quality of member of the European Union, while safety comes from the affiliation to NATO and the partnership with the United States,” stated the MEP.

The delegation of the EPP led by Siegfried Muresan paid a working visit to Chisinau on May 23-24. According to the MEP, the goal of the visit was to assess the political situation, the Government’s work and the state of the parties of the political center-right of Moldova.
