The parliamentary majority’s attacks on the Constitutional Court represent a deviation from the separation of powers in the state, which is a fundamental European value. By such actions, the current parliamentary majority fully lost the European partners’ confidence, MEP Siegfried Mureșan said in reaction to the recent events in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
“The close cooperation between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova depends on the functioning of the rule of law and democratic principles. We cannot tolerate such abuses. I call on the members of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova to return to the observance of the Constitution and the democratic rules. The sanctions on the part of the European institutions will be inevitable if the current parliamentary majority continues to contribute to the deterioration of the democratic standards,” Siegfried Mureșan posted on Facebook.
The MEP added that the recent actions by the parliamentary majority are against the interests of the citizens who in the presidential elections voted for a reformed, modern country close to the European Union, with institutions that work in the interests of the people, not a country in which the basic institutions of democracy are molded according to political and party interests.
For his part, MEP Dragoș Tudorache said it is a political crisis that was caused irresponsibly by a political group whose interests do not converge with the Republic of Moldova’s interests. “We condemn such political practices that represent a rupture in the interests of the Republic of Moldova and the European path that has been followed by this country the past few years. I call for responsibility and respect for the citizens’ vote, respect for the law and rule of law. It is important that the democratic forces in the Republic of Moldova do not become involved in this political “farce” aimed at creating the appearances of a constitution crisis,” stated Dragoș Tudorache.
The MEP noted that the president of the Constitutional Court should complete her duties, while the replacement decision does not have any legal force. “I call for calm as it not the moment for the escalation of the situation and for extreme measures that can endanger the life and integrity of the Moldovan citizen,” said Dragoș Tudorache.
In a press briefing in the evening of April 23, President Maia Sandu said that an unprecedented attack on constitutional order and on the independence of the Constitutional Court was witnessed. In the meeting of the Supreme Security Council, she asked the managers of the law enforcement agencies not to allow to be involved in anti-constitutional actions and not to fulfill illegal orders. She also requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to investigate the actions from the angle of usurpation of state power and the acts of the participants in this attack against law and order.
