Dialogue and stability are the foundation of a functional democracy. The Republic of Moldova needs progress and evolution, not revolution, the head of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Cooperation with Moldova Andi Cristea said in an interview for Radio Free Europe, referring to the anti-government protests staged in Chisinau, IPN reports.

The MEP said that since its investiture, the Strelet Government showed political will, but action and results are needed to meet the legitimate needs of the protesting people. “A real dialogue is now needed with the protesters as a deep fault line was created between the ordinary people and the political class. But the stability of the state is a red line that must be kept, especially now that Chisinau urgently needs financing and credit lines and the openness of international partners, first of all the IMF,” he stated.

Asked about the possible early parliamentary elections, for which some of the parties plead, Andi Cristea said the early elections would have meaning if the Moldovan people wanted this. “It’s hard for me to develop here, but I will go beyond my mandate here and will say that from the viewpoint of the EU, stability is more important than the early elections that could take place. On the other hand, it is evident that the people who take to the street ask for particular things and a part of those demands are exactly what the politicians influenced by Moscow demand for their part. So, a lot of attention and a subtle analysis of what is going on there are needed,” he said.

Andi Cristea also said there are assurances that the European executive continues to pay the appropriate attention to the EaP states even if the EU now faces the crisis of refugees who come from the south, Northern Africa and Middle East. The European Parliament supports the European integration path of the six EaP states, starting with Moldova, and it evidently expects responsibility on the part of the Moldovan politicians.
