The Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims “Memoria” launches an awareness campaign on the problems and needs of torture victims. The campaign is dedicated to the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, celebrated on June 26, reports Info-Prim Neo.
The campaign, with the motto “Rehabilitation works and it is a right of torture survivors” will span over a week, starting Monday, June 25, and includes a series of debates, round-table discussion, and other awareness and sensibility-raising activities.
“The campaign is aimed at informing and sensitizing the masses in supporting the victims of torture. The agenda of “Memoria” Center has several informative actions about the problems and needs of torture victims, as well as about the act of torture in general”, said the Center’s manager Ludmila Popovici, on Monday, during the Center’s Open House Day.
The Center “Memoria” provides medical and social support to three categories of victims, divided by the events they have gone through. “I come here to check my health, but also for some spiritual comfort, because the workers here know how to do it best, because they are not indifferent towards our suffering”, says Lucia Vrancean, victim of deportation during World War II.
“I found out about this Center from the Mayor Dorina Chirtoaca, whom I addressed in 2010. At first, I used to come here twice a week. They gave medical aid, along with psychological counsel, which helped greatly in recovering after the events of April 7, 2009”, says Radu Banari.
The Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims “Memoria” provides medical and psychological help to almost 400 people who have suffered from political repressions, recent repressions and deportations. In its 12 years of activity, it helped almost 1500 people to recuperate and re-integrate into the society. During this period, the Center has spent almost 1 million euro.
