A number of members and sympathizers of the People’s Party of the Republic of Moldova (PPRM) came together before the Government Building where they unloaded boxes with frozen apples. The farmers attending the event warned the authorities that if no solutions are found to compensate them for their losses, they will stage mass protests and will bring tractors in central Chisinau, IPN reports.
PPRM chairman Alexandru Oleinic stated is sad that today, after Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the EU, the farmers sustain losses. He underlined that the party’s priorities include agriculture, rural development, and the national producers. “We are ready to come to power and to bring things in order in the country,” he said
PPRM deputy chairman Valeriu Cosarciuc noted that the Government is to blame for the fact that the farmers didn’t manage to gather the apples and they got frozen because the authorities didn’t create the infrastructure needed for storing up the fruit. “We demand that the Cabinet immediately come together for a meeting to examine the situation of farmers,” he stated.
The protesters carried placards with such wording as “You lie and apples freeze” and “Please forgive us, but we do not produce as much as you steal”. Other placards indicated the amounts of frozen apples in different districts: “Donduseni – 19,000 tonnes”, “Soroca – 22,000 tonnes”, “Ocnita – 20,000 tonnes”. Besides the frozen apples, the protesters also brought figurines with the faces of politicians. They pulled them down with a broom and then dropped the frozen apples over them.
The PPRM is under No. 12 in the ballot for the November 30 parliamentary elections.
