This article is part of an IPN series that aims to provide basic biographical data and information on the incomes, wealth and professional experience of Chisinau mayoral contenders.

Ivan Diacov is running with the support of the Renato Usatîi’s Our Party, without being a member. Diacov’s campaign slogan is “Let’s Save Chisinau Together!”, stemming from his assumption that “the city has become one of the most decayed urban areas in our country.”

Diacov, 66, was born in Russia’s Kurgan Oblast to a family of Bessarabian deportees originating from Bașcalia village in Basarabeasca district. A retired prosecutor, Ivan is the younger brother of Dumitru Diacov, the honorary president of the Democratic Party.

Having graduated from the Moldova State University’s Law Faculty, Diacov built a successful career as a prosecutor, climbing the hierarchy way up to deputy chief prosecutor of Chisinau (1994-1998) and then chief prosecutor of Chisinau, a post he held until 2001. Ivan Diacov took a head of department job at the Prosecutor General’s Office for the next decade, before returning as Chisinau chief prosecutor between 2010 and 2015.

Diacov stepped down in 2015 “in protest against the abuses of the PGO,” relinquishing all the distinctions conferred upon him over the years.

As a candidate, Ivan Diacov says Chisinau doesn’t need electoral programs, but rather “concrete actions.” The first thing he would do as Mayor is dismantle the existing corruption schemes that he estimates starve the city coffers of two annual municipal budgets in missed revenue.

Per Diacov’s declaration of incomes and assets for the last two years, his family earned over 100,000 lei from teaching and scientific activity, and 286,000 lei in pension payments. Also, the Diacovs sold a car for 150,000 lei. The family owes over 1 million lei, while also holding savings totaling 930,000 lei. The Diacovs also own two land plots, a house, a garage and two cars.
