From November 2015 to February 2016, he was chairman of the initiative group for the republican referendum which aimed to amend the Constitution regarding the direct popular election and dismissal of the president, the decrease of the number of MPs and to limit parliamentary immunity.

In February 2019, he ran for Parliament in the 33rd electoral district on behalf of the ACUM bloc. He won the election and became one of the 26 ACUM MPs. Shortly after, he resigned as MP in favor of the role of interior minister, a position he still holds.

At the beginning of the election campaign, he said that he had decided to run for office once again in order to allow citizens to "take their city back". His platform for Chișinău City Hall is structured in the form of a pyramid, which has the inhabitants of the capital at the top. According to him, if changes are not performed over the course of the next five to ten years, Chișinău will collapse.

In case he wins the elections, Andrei Năstase wants to increase social responsibility regarding the development of the city and to appoint a deputy mayor dedicated to the problems of the suburbs. As part of his activity, Năstase aims to implement good practices from developed cities, which he claims will transform Chișinău into a modern city. Andrei Năstase said that he will keep professionals at City Hall, yet will dismiss corrupt clerks.
