A mobile blood collection center was opened on Tuesday, September 30, at the Ion and Doina Club of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Nicolae Testemitanu” in Chisinau, where roughly two hundred students and teachers are expected to donate their blood. The vice president of the Association of Medicine University Students and Residents, Marcel Abras, told Info-Prim Neo that the students have come to donate blood because they've heard of the limited blood stocks. “We want to encourage students to participate in such events too, not just in merrymaking”, says Abras. According to Alexandru Gherman, department head at the National Blood Transfusion Center, the campaign aims to promote voluntary and benevolent donation of blood. Gherman mentioned that the students of the Professional School no.1 who have reached 18 years also donate blood each year. A donor gives around 350 to 450 grams of blood. One should have some tea and a light meal before donating blood and after that should avoid physical effort and hot baths for 2 days. Anyone between 18 and 60 years of age may donate. The blood stocks needed to cover the one-year demand of the hospitals in Moldova is 80,000 units. So far, there have been collected 50,000 units.
