Non-governmental media organizations are asking the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in the context of statements made by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for national security, defense and public order, Chiril Moţpan about the interceptions of several experts, journalists and activists from different fields, to confirm or deny the information regarding the shadowing of media representatives. In a statement, the NGOs also asked the Prosecutor General's Office, which announced that it had been notified ex officio as a result of these statements, to conduct an objective investigation and to act in the spirit of transparency, IPN reports.
Moreover, media NGOs urge politicians to operate with verified information.
"We remind that the Supreme Law provides that respect and protection of the person is a primary duty of the state. Likewise, the Constitution states that "the citizens of the Republic of Moldova benefit from the protection of the state" and that "the state respects and protects the personal, family and private life". Also, through this document, the Republic of Moldova is committed to ensuring the secrecy of telephone calls and other legal means of communication, the statement said.
According to the signatories, the European Convention on Human Rights, by article 8, stipulates that every person has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence.
The signatories of the statement are the Center for Independent Journalism, the Association of Independent Press, the Association of Electronic Press, the Center for Investigative Journalism, the Committee for Press Freedom, the Association of Independent Journalists and Rise Moldova.
